I’ve seen fruit trees, especially pears, do crazy things like that when stressed. Trees grow the flower buds in late summer for the following spring. If those buds open up way ahead of schedule in the fall, it will cut back on the spring flowers. And, that will cut back on the crop. You can’t do much about the stress of wild temperature swings and excessive heat. But, you can help out with the stress brought on by drought by giving your tree extra water when needed.
