How do I prepare my new plants for winter? Do they need to be trimmed?

New plants, especially, need some TLC in the fall and winter!

Perennials are about the only plants I trim back. I really like the dried hydrangea flowers and seedheads of ornamental grasses in the winter. Watering well and mulching is important in the fall to protect the roots. Our planting and care guide has tips on mulching and winter care. It may seem like a hassle, but on nice winter days, be sure to water your new plants.
