I have a Cool Splash Honeysuckle and after the leaves had been exposed to frost I cut it back like a perennial. Was this a huge mistake?

Not a huge mistake!

Though, it’s always better to cut back plants in late winter, early spring rather than this time of year. Just mulch your Cool Splash Diervilla well for winter to help protect the roots. With healthy roots, the top should push new branches in the spring. You might also give it some balanced fertilizer in the mid-spring to help get it going again.
