Knowing how much sun or shade your gardens will get will help with picking out plants.

In the front, it’s nice to have a mix of evergreens, colorful foliage plants and flowering shrubs. Barberry is easy to grow and comes with red, orange or golden yellow leaves. By the front porch, you must have hydrangeas! They flower during the summer and into fall, the time of year that is best for sitting on a porch and enjoying the day. Think about adding a redtwig dogwood to the mix. The bright red stems are beautiful on dreary winter days.

For the side of the house, there are lots options for colorful low maintenance plants – hibiscus, ninebark, viburnum, spirea, hypericum, roses and weigela.

Do you want a tree on a corner of the house? Parkland Pillar Birch, Centennial Blush Star Magnolia or Ruby Tears Crab would be a good choice. For a tree in the lawn, look at Snowdance Tree Lilac, Scarlet Jewell Maple, Matador Maple or Majestic Skies Northern Pin Oak. For more ideas, take a look at our Yard Design Ideas.
