My azalea have a lot of dead branches on them, is it lack of rain last summer?

Lack of rain could be one of the causes. Plants really need regular watering through the season.

And, it usually takes watering from time to time, in addition to rainfall. If the winter is dry, you should plan to water on warm winter days.
