Why aren't my plants coming back this Spring?

It can be hard after winter waiting to see what will leaf out and what doesn’t, and with a new plant, it can be iffy.

It could be that they didn’t make it through the winter. You might take a picture of the plants and a cutting to your local garden center for advice. I have found that plants that don’t make it through the first winter are usually because I didn’t get enough soil around the roots, water during the winter when it is dry, fertilizer late in the season, or didn’t mulch the plant to protect it from the temperature swings. Now, I follow the First Editions’ guide on planting and care. It’s been very helpful.
