Why do my shade perennials only come back one season?

It could be a few things - here’s a few ideas.

First, plant in the spring so they have all season to grow roots to help them through the temperature swings that come with winter. Even though they are in the shade, be sure to give them plenty of water the first year. Mulch to keep the roots cool in the summer, warm in the winter and conserve moisture. A few hardy shade plants to try: Lamium, silver archangel, hardy plumbago, miniature mat daisy, columbine, soapwort, coral bells and campanula. Your local garden center will have more ideas.
